Be As You Are

“It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.” ― Andre Gide, Autumn Leaves This world unnecessarily makes us unhappy. It seems that our generation is more likely to experience stress and pressure than previous generations. That’s because there are so many reasons why we’re likely to be depressed: pressures at home, school, and work, worry about financial issues, global warming, and pandemic. In particular, social pressures we face every day likely to cause emotional instability. Our world keeps asking us who we are: What’s your job? What’s your educational background? Where are you from? They keep asking us to … Continue ReadingBe As You Are

Osaka in Rain

“It’s faith in something and enthusiasm for something that makes a life worth living.” ― Oliver Wendell Holmes Hi guys. It’s been a little while since I lasted posted here. Why? Well, it was neither because I was lazy nor lost passion for blogging. It was simply because there were so many things I was interested in, and I decided to commit myself to my passions instead of blogging. But hey, I’m back here now (Yay)! So where have I been? Well, for most of the entire October, I was learning HTML and CSS to learn basic web skills; and that’s not for Canvas of Dreams, but for accomplishing my … Continue ReadingOsaka in Rain

Twelve Midnight

“The finest of pleasures are always the unexpected ones.” ― Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus It was twelve midnight in Tokyo. The city fell asleep, and people were missing. Since it was right after the shower rain, haze spilled into the dark night sky. The urban skyline was mysteriously lit up by skyscrapers. It was like an alternative universe where things went differently than in ours. In the night, I had no choice but staying in Shinjuku, Tokyo. After having enjoyed talking with my friend, I realized I missed the last train. Giving up on slight hope of going back to my home in Yokohama, I decided to spend the … Continue ReadingTwelve Midnight

Chinatown in Rain

“Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” ― Rumi Maybe once in a while, we should walk in the rain. So many of us feel uncomfortable walking in the rain and getting wet, yet our body is filled with water. Walking mindlessly in the rain may heal your mind. Not only does it give you an opportunity to get closer to nature, it also allows to touch your own soul. In the previous post, I posted the photographic journal of the walk through the downtown of Yokohama, where streets were sparsely populated. Then I went to Chinatown. Despite the rainy weather, the district was … Continue ReadingChinatown in Rain

A Rainy Day Walk

“Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.” ― Bob Marley It was a rainy day in my city. The sidewalks were full of puddles, and the sun was buried behind the clouds. As I posted a series of rainy photos last year, I love photographing urban scenes on a rainy day. When I arrived at Yokohama Station, I heard the rain thrumming on the roof. I wondered if I should hop on the subway. But somehow a part of me didn’t want to miss a single moment of what it feels like walking all the way up to the downtown on a rainy day. So, I began walking, … Continue ReadingA Rainy Day Walk

Before Leaving Japan

“Life is a journey, not a destination.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson Only did I recently get a chance to cross the ocean to go to a country halfway around the earth. Ever since I’ve returned to Japan from study abroad in 2010, I’ve dreamed of going back to the US.  It still feels strange that I will actually head to the country tomorrow. And now that I already started to miss my home, and here are several collections of my photos taken across Tokyo from January to April.

Dear Saul Leiter

“Not everybody trusts paintings but people believe photographs.” ― Ansel Adams It’s rare to snow in Tokyo and it’s even rarer to snow in Spring Equinox day, which is kind of an irony. Usually, snow (or rain) gives me a perfect reason to be lazy and stay at home, but I decided to go to Tokyo to photograph how it looks like to be in the city when snowing. Additionally, since I had seen Saul Leiter’s photographs in an exhibition last year, I’ve been inspired by his works; and I’ve always wanted to do street photography in a rainy/snowy day like he did.

One Rainy Day

“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.” ― Charlie Chaplin Rain has its own elegance. Many photographers consider the bad weather as the worst situation for photography. I, however, disagree with them. Each weather has its own beauty, and so does the raining weather. As I mentioned earlier, rain has its own elegance; and that’s especially true when you’re photographing in a city. For example; walking the streets of West Shinjuku when it rains, you would see that the very tip of a skyscraper is covered with fog. And fog can be excellent for creating dramatic effects in photography. Not only does rain … Continue ReadingOne Rainy Day

A Rainy Day on the Bus

“For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain.” ― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Only just recently have I got a new phone – Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which features a Leica-branded dual camera, I deliberately photographed the bus I arrived on from outside and inside on my way back home at a rainy night. Also since I usually don’t carry around my Canon DSLR on my bag for work, I didn’t have any choice but to photograph it solely with the phone. Even though shooting in low light and at night is challenging, the result was better than expected. Everything behind the … Continue ReadingA Rainy Day on the Bus

Rainy Day Photography in May

“Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.” ― Bob Marley Many consider a rainy day as one of the worst days for photography.  Come to think of it, I, however, think each day has its own attraction and feature; each day is slightly different to one another. In Japan, we have a rainy season during May and June, called Tsuyu. Like everyone else, I’m not the type of person who appreciates a rainy day. But as I mentioned earlier, each day has its own attraction. Rain makes photography not only unique but elegant and attractive. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take many shots, but here I want to showcase you 8 photographs … Continue ReadingRainy Day Photography in May
