2022: A Year in Review

2023 is a few hours away. Can you believe it?

2022 is sunsetting. I say the same thing every year, but I really can’t believe this year is also coming to its end so soon. During this year, I’ve been through a lot, including both joys and sorrows. My 2022 overall was a big chunk of adventure despite the fact that I spent most of my time at home thanks to WFH. My interactions with my friends were extraordinary just like yours.

The year is almost close to its end. As I’ve been through lots of traumatic experiences last year, I didn’t do the year review for 2021.

Contrarily, 2022 for me was overall a year of progress. Since my job was entirely WFH, so I never had a chance to actually visit the office and see my colleagues. I only interacted with them through Google chat and felt like we’re pretty much still stuck in 2020.

And this year was the first entire year I spent without my father who passed away last year. His words and his smile are still shining in my heart and always will. 2022 is the year I realize I have to be on my own and is the year my mother became my only family.

During this year, not only did I lose my maternal aunt, Misao-san, but also my paternal aunt, Miyoko-san, as well. Since last year, death became something so close and even more real and made me re-think what it really means to live. You see, when you talk about death, you have to talk about living.

On my personal level, my computing activities played a central role in my universe. Including Android programming, Linux server engineering, and Learning C/C++ via interacting with the Linux kernel, I’ve achieved some of my personal goals and am still working on them which even shaped my goal to be a mobile app developer. In this regard, my personal computing activities outside of my job shaped who I am today.

So, here let me give you a glimpse into my personal achievements and my worldview.

Android app development

So, as I mentioned above, my app development process played a significant role during the whole year. My initial goal was to release it to the Play Store, but as the app became bigger, more complicated, and more experimental, I realized that it was almost impossible to release it. But still, the app development experience overall was quite rewarding considering the fact that I was able to learn and re-learn Java and the OOP structural mechanisms.

As of now, almost 80% of the app is completed but now the app became my Sagrada Familia, and I’m really not sure when I can actually complete the app. But all in all, the app can be my portfolio and it’s a great showcase to prove my skillset anyway.

Linux server enginnering

Outside of my job, I think I spent quite a few hours on Linux this year, especially all thanks to my home server. As I’ve already written my abstract review of the server and kept mentioning in other posts, the Linux server indeed was the game changer of my computing life. By installing samba server, I entirely replaced my old Dropbox folder with my own platform which I built from scratch. Not only did the overall experience save so much of my money but also gave me a priceless and rewarding tech experience.

Along with my home server, I also built a LAMP server on AWS. Even though I haven’t had a chance to dedicate myself to this project, my goal with it is to build another Android app that interacts with the AWS-powered server. Hopefully, I can start my new project in January.

C/C++ and Linux kernel

This is another initiative to interact with Linux. There has been a book I bought maybe a few years back but never had a chance to actually start reading until a few months back. And it’s all about how to build Linux commands, such as cat, head, mv, with C-programming language to access the kernel’s API.

I haven’t finished the book and am still halfway through it, but I’m genuinely enjoying the process. For the past few years, my computing life has always had something to do with Linux, but I personally didn’t have much chance to learn about the open-source OS’s deepest levels. And my relationship with Linux became even deeper than ever before this year since it’s now an integral part of my universe.

Through the process of learning the OS, not only did I have a chance to re-educate me with the essentials of Linux but also had a precious chance to program in C/C++. In addition to that, I just learned what a pointer is, which is quite an important core concept of C programming. The more I learn about it, the more I’m attracted to the endless world of computers!

Afterthoughts

All in all, this is my 2022. How was yours? Did you achieve your goal? Have you found your own mission in your life? What was your 2022 like? And what is your ambition for 2023? Let me know in the comment below.

Anyways, thanks for reading my blog post as always, and see you next year!

Finally, this is my personal tradition, but I always list my most featured photos of the year here. So, enjoy!!
