Monogamy Is an Illusion

“What we wait around a lifetime for with one person, we can find in a moment with someone else.”

Son of a bitch. Motherfucker. Womanish. There are a lot of phrases and words that disrespect women in the English language. Even in my native language, Japanese, you can find a certain number of phrases that ridicule them.

But when it o comes to men, there are many phrases that praise being a man. You’re the man. Men’s man. And this trend is especially true among baby boomers who grew up without any notions of gender equality.
Although I’m a man, I feel sick considering how they have been treating their wives and women in general.

Occasionally I have witnessed some middle-aged men yelling at their wives in public spaces. This could be happened in anywhere. Train. Bus. Coffee shop.

And this gender inequality can be seen in the marriage too. According to the Oxford dictionary, monogamy is the practice of marrying or state of being married to one person at a time. Advanced Western and Asian nations mostly practice monogamous marriage.

But this western concept of monogamy has a serious systematic problem, when considering high divorce rates particularly in the U.S. And most notably, some celebrities and successful business owners tend to ditch their long-time partner and marry younger models and actresses than their age, showing off their “trophy wives” in public media.

So, my question is what’s the difference between western monogamy and polygamy in the African and Arabian world?

Finally, here are some shots I photographed in the Shonan area at the end of August.
