“My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?”
― David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
Sea breeze clears my mind, and the sea expanded along the beach reminds me how small my problems really are. When I want to refresh my mind, I always go to the beach. Listening to the sound of the waves, I reflect about life.
Life seems complex, but it might be not as complex as we think it is. Perhaps we are to blame for making it harder than it has to be. When we were younger, life was way simpler. I, for one, used to smile a lot when I was a kid and never questioned how the world is organizing itself.
My parents used to take me to camping a lot, especially during summers. In a campsite, I met another kid in the morning, and we ended up being best buddies in the night. When we were younger, things were as simple as that.
As we grew older, however, external influences shape our minds, and we gradually start seeing the world through a biased lens. We don’t believe in people, doubt the society itself, and eventually start losing hope in the world as a whole. And we confuse ourselves too much and start losing touch with who we really are.
But maybe, as I mentioned earlier, it is ourselves who make it harder and harder to live our lives. It is us who don’t forgive those wronged us, finding ourselves in a constant cycle of pain. It is us who confine ourselves in a comfort zone, hindering ourselves from challenging what we really want. Maybe we are not to blame for everything we have done over the course of time, but some decisions we made.
Maybe we are still not sure what is right and wrong. But at least we are sure that we are responsible for our own happiness.
Life is just like the waves. We flow back and forth but eventually reach the shore one day.
